The Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, has publicly acknowledged Professor Nwadiuto Afonne Akani’s remarkable contributions to the growth and development of Paediatrics and Child Health at the institution.
In a post made via his official platform, Prof. Georgewill celebrated the retirement of the seasoned academic and medic, who recently turned 70 and delivered the university’s 36th Valedictory Lecture.
The event, which marked the end of Professor Akani’s long and illustrious academic journey, was attended by members of the university management, staff, students, family members, colleagues, and friends from all walks of life.
In her farewell address, Professor Akani gave an emotion-laden speech, urging those she leaves behind in the university system to continue prioritising the well-being of all children — a cause she championed passionately throughout her career.
“Thank you, Professor Nwadiuto, for so long a time with us,” Prof. Georgewill wrote.
“Thank you for your contributions to the growth of Paediatrics and Child Health in the University of Port Harcourt. Thank you for all you did to move Uniport to greater heights.”
Her exit marks the close of a chapter for the university’s College of Health Sciences, where she was widely respected as a pillar of excellence and mentorship.
Starreporters’ correspondence gathered that stakeholders in the academic and medical communities have continued to send their best wishes and tributes to a professor whose career has impacted lives within and beyond the four walls of the university.
