The Yobe Government has paid N80 million as its counterpart fund for the implementation of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) from 2023 to 2026.
Hajiya Adama Madaki, the state’s Coordinator of the project, disclosed this in an interview with the Starreporters on Monday in Damaturu.
She explained that L-PRES is a six-year, World Bank–supported programme jointly funded by the Bank, the state, and benefiting communities.
“The project is currently being implemented in 20 states of the federation.
“There are certain value chains that L-PRES is promoting, and they include sheep and goats, dairy, beef, poultry, piggery and honey,” she said.
Madaki noted that Yobe keyed into cattle, sheep and goats value chains because of the state’s comparative advantage.
According to her, the project, which commenced in December 2022, seeks to improve livestock productivity, enhance commercialisation, and strengthen the resilience of targeted livestock production systems.
She said that so far, 700 crop residue crushers and 20 solar-powered refrigerators had been procured for distribution to livestock farmers and butchers.
The coordinator added that more than 71 solar-powered boreholes had been sunk at grazing reserves, stock routes and pastoralist communities across the state.
Other interventions, she said, included the establishment of five pasture demonstration sites in Lawankalam, Geidam, Jakusko, Kanda and Danchuwa to enhance pasture development.
“L-PRES has also rehabilitated veterinary clinics in Potiskum, Nguru and Damaturu, furnishing them with laboratory equipment.
“Artificial insemination centres were established in Nguru and Jakusko, while cold chain facilities were installed at the Damaturu veterinary clinic for vaccine storage,” she said.
Madaki further listed ongoing projects to include the construction of a modern livestock market in Geidam and slaughter slabs in various locations.
She revealed that no fewer than 600 veterinary doctors, livestock farmers and environmentalists had been trained under L-PRES in animal husbandry, waste management, conflict resolution and related fields.
The coordinator commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni for his unwavering support, noting that he had already paid the state’s 2026 counterpart fund in advance.
“This is a governor who is so passionate about agriculture. He has demonstrated that by paying the state’s 2026 counterpart fund even though we are still in 2025,” she said.
