China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has called for deeper cooperation between Nigeria and China, stressing the need for both countries to work together to safeguard peace, justice, and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Speaking in Abuja at a film screening organised by the China Cultural Centre to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, Yu said the event was to honour history, remember sacrifices, and highlight the importance of preserving peace.
He recalled the horrors of Japan’s 1937 invasion of Nanjing, where more than 300,000 people were massacred, describing it as one of the darkest chapters in modern history. He noted that China bore heavy losses during World War II, with over 35 million casualties and economic damages of more than 600 billion dollars, but contributed significantly to the global fight against fascism.
Yu urged the international community to uphold the United Nations system and build a fairer global order. He stressed that China and Nigeria, as leading developing nations and voices of the Global South, must strengthen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and fully implement agreements reached by their leaders.
The event featured the screening of the film Dead to Rights, inspired by the Nanjing Massacre, aimed at promoting reflection on the tragedies of war and the shared responsibility to prevent future conflicts.
