The Initiative for Advancement of the Albinism Cause (INAAC)
on Tuesday called for urgent support to combat skin cancer among individuals with albinism
in Nigeria.

Founder of INAAC, Joy Odigie, made the call in a statement in Benin to commemorate the 2025
World Cancer Day, annually celebrated on Feb. 4.

World Cancer Day, led by the Union for International Cancer Control, is an international awareness day about cancer, encouraging its prevention and
mobilising action to address the global cancer epidemic.

The theme for this year’s global observance is “United by Unique”, underscoring the need for personalised care for those impacted by cancer.

Odigie, therefore, stated that the appeal highlighted the vulnerability of persons with albinism, who are at increased risk due to low melanin levels in their skin, which offers minimal protection against harmful UV rays.

She added that “currently, INAAC is seeking assistance for three individuals with albinism battling skin cancer in Edo State, including 25-year-old Blessing Omoaka, who recently had her leg amputated due to skin cancer complications and requires help with medical expenses.

“Mrs Rosemary Umar-Adinoyi is also in need of support after undergoing surgery for skin cancer and being referred for further treatment at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

“Additiinally, ThankGod Ibhasuemonjie, in his thirties, is seeking financial aid to continue his radiotherapy sessions at LUTH.”

Odigie emphasised the importance of tailored interventions and community support to improve health outcomes for persons with albinism affected by skin cancer.

She disclosed that NAAC organised free skin and eye check-ups for more than 150 persons with albinism in Edo in the last three years.

She noted that the NGO also offered subsidised surgery programme to assist patients financially, stressing that many more persons are waiting for assistance.

She urged individuals and organisations to contribute through donations, raising awareness, and partnering to enhance healthcare access.

“We are asking for donation of sunscreen lotions with SPF 50+ to persons with albinism to prevent skin cancer as part of organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities, ” she added.

She advocated the establishment of free skin cancer centres in each of the six geographical zones and urged Federal Government to revive the free cancer treatment for persons with albinism at the National Hospital, Abuja.
