The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill, has extended warm felicitations to all staff and stakeholders of the institution on the occasion of the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration.

Recall that the Federal Government recently declared Thursday, 1st May 2025, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Workers’ Day celebration—a moment dedicated to recognising the hard work, resilience, and contributions of Nigerian workers across all sectors.

In a goodwill message addressed to the University community, Professor Georgewill acknowledged the vital contributions of both teaching and non-teaching staff to the daily functioning and long-term legacy of the University, describing them as the “invisible hands behind the scenes” who work tirelessly to sustain the institution.

“Today is one of those days we must pause to acknowledge and celebrate the dignity of labour and honour men and women whose commitment, service, and sacrifice keep the heart of the University of Port Harcourt beating,” he stated.

He lauded the staff’s unwavering dedication despite challenges, noting that their early mornings, long hours, and steadfast commitment demonstrate not only resilience but also a deep belief in the power of education to transform society.

“Indeed, it is our collective labour that sustains the good name and enduring legacy of the University of Port Harcourt,” Professor Georgewill affirmed. “You are not just workers—you are pillars of this institution.”

He urged members of staff to remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence, uphold integrity, and continue to serve with honesty and ethical conduct. The Vice-Chancellor emphasised that it is through such values that the University can remain globally competitive while staying rooted in principles of dignity and purpose.

Extending his message beyond the University, Professor Georgewill also acknowledged the efforts of the wider Nigerian workforce.

“We also extend our goodwill to the entire Nigeria labour force; your hard work has not gone unnoticed. Let us continue to believe in a better Nigeria and to continue to do what is right even when it is hard,” he remarked.

The Vice Chancellor concluded by renewing the charge to all workers to remain committed to excellence and ethical service delivery, underscoring their collective role in shaping the University and the nation.
