The University of Port Harcourt has officially handed over its newly completed Arts Theatre to the Department of Theatre and Film Studies, a project made possible through the support of TETFund. The facility, designed to boost academic and professional training, marks a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to equipping students with modern resources for industry readiness.
Speaking during the handover, Vice Chancellor Prof. Owunari Georgewill commended TETFund for its continued support in advancing the institution’s infrastructure. He emphasized that the new theatre provides a conducive environment for practical learning, ensuring that Theatre Arts students acquire hands-on skills needed to excel in the creative and performing arts industry.
The new facility is equipped with modern seating, performance space, and technical installations tailored to enhance teaching, rehearsals, and stage productions. According to the university management, the centre will not only serve academic purposes but will also provide a platform for students to engage in productions that mirror real-world industry experiences.
Prof. Georgewill further urged the Department of Theatre and Film Studies to ensure proper maintenance of the theatre so that it remains in optimal condition for years to come. He reaffirmed the university’s dedication to nurturing creative talent, noting that such infrastructure investments are crucial for producing graduates who are industry-ready upon completion of their studies.
The commissioning ceremony witnessed members of the university management, faculty staff, and students, who expressed excitement about the new opportunities the theatre will provide. With this facility, UNIPORT continues to strengthen its position as a hub for academic excellence, creativity, and innovation in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
