The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) held its 19th Valedictory Senate Session on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in a grand celebration to honour the distinguished careers of ten esteemed professors. The ceremony, hosted at the CBN Centre of Excellence Building, University Park, drew members of the University Senate, faculty, invited guests, and students, all gathered to pay tribute to the remarkable achievements of these scholars.
The atmosphere was filled with emotion, admiration, and celebration as the University community came together to honour the retiring academics. The event opened with the University anthem and a ceremonial procession of the honourees. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill, delivered a heartfelt address, commending the retirees for their decades of service, academic excellence, mentorship, and contributions to nation-building.
The ceremony was presided over by Professor Georgewill, the 9th Vice-Chancellor of the University, who introduced each of the retirees. He invited the respective Deans and Provosts to present formal citations in honour of their colleagues. Those celebrated included:

The event was laden with emotions and nostalgia as the honourees took turns reflecting on their journeys and milestones at the University. Key moments were captured in photographs and videos, highlighting the presentation of plaques and commemorative awards—symbols of their long and impactful service.
The highlight of the event included touching addresses, standing ovations, and group photographs featuring the retirees with members of university management. A representative of the honourees expressed heartfelt gratitude to the University for the honour and recognition.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) delivered the vote of thanks, appreciating all who contributed to the success of the ceremony. The event drew to a close with prayers and the singing of the National and University Anthems.
