The University of Port Harcourt is making significant strides in transforming education through its Online Distance and e-Learning (ODEL) program. Recently, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, monitored the ongoing semester examinations of ODEL students in Lagos, highlighting the institution’s commitment to creating a flexible, hybrid learning model.
The ODEL program is designed to combine online learning with onsite examinations conducted at various centers. This ensures that students, regardless of location, can benefit from quality education while maintaining the integrity of assessments. By adopting this model, the University is opening new doors for students who may not be able to attend classes physically on campus but are eager to pursue their academic goals.
Prof. Georgewill expressed gratitude to the Governing Council, University Management, Senate, and the entire institution for their support of the initiative. He noted that the vision is for ODEL to grow into a major hub for learning, teaching, and research with global reach. This forward-looking approach reflects the University’s mission to enhance access to education and prepare students for a dynamic world.
Special commendation was given to Professor Brilliant Agaviezor, the current Director of the ODEL Centre, alongside past Directors, for their dedication in driving the program’s growth. Their efforts ensure that thousands of prospective students unable to relocate to campus still have the opportunity to pursue degrees that can boost their careers and open up new opportunities in life.
With ODEL, the University of Port Harcourt is not only embracing technology but also reshaping the future of higher education in Nigeria. The program represents a bridge between tradition and innovation, offering students the best of both worlds—flexibility and quality assurance.
