In a remarkable stride toward enhancing the quality of education, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Professor Owunari Georgewill, has commenced a significant upgrade of classroom facilities by facilitating the replacement of old, worn-out blackboards with brand-new whiteboards across lecture halls on campus
.The initiative, which is already in motion as evidenced by the installation scenes captured in several departments, reflects a strong commitment to modernizing the teaching environment. From dusty, barely legible blackboards to clean, easy-to-maintain whiteboards, the transformation marks a major step forward in improving the learning experience for both lecturers and students.
In some of the classrooms, lecturers were already seen actively using the new whiteboards during lectures, while other units documented the process of unboxing, lifting, and positioning the boards — signaling full implementation.Speaking on the development, a faculty member expressed gratitude, noting that the introduction of the new boards would not only enhance visibility during lectures but also encourage more effective teaching methods. “This is a welcome upgrade. It shows the administration’s interest in academic excellence and staff welfare,” he said.
The upgraded boards are being installed in multiple classrooms, including those that had become notorious for their barely functional blackboards covered in years of wear and graffiti. This change is expected to reduce teaching interruptions, improve student focus, and align UNIPORT with global classroom standards.
This bold step is part of the Vice-Chancellor’s broader agenda to revamp infrastructure and ensure that the university provides a conducive, 21st-century learning environment. According to insiders, more upgrades to lecture facilities, digital tools, and classroom technology are underway.
As UNIPORT approaches its next chapter of academic leadership, these visible improvements serve as a testament to the current administration’s resolve to raise the bar for quality education and academic excellence
