The University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has taken significant steps toward infrastructure development and student welfare enhancement with the recent overhaul of its convocation arena media facilities and commencement of hostel foam replacement.

In a statement issued by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, the university confirmed the full installation of state-of-the-art media equipment in its new convocation arena. This development follows a promise made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), His Excellency Nyesom Wike, during a courtesy visit by the University Governing Council led by its Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa.

Promise made, promise kept,” Prof. Georgewill said. “The new convocation arena now boasts formidable media equipment befitting a venue of such importance. We are deeply grateful to the FCT Minister and his family for honoring the pledge to uplift our media infrastructure.”

According to the Vice Chancellor, the initiative aligns with UniPort’s commitment to delivering world-class experiences during academic and ceremonial functions. The new equipment includes modern sound systems, LED display units, and other technical enhancements designed to improve coverage and communication during university events.

In a parallel development, the university has begun the phased replacement of student foams in its halls of residence to improve student comfort and wellbeing.

Prof. Georgewill noted that the process is part of the institution’s broader welfare reform, aimed at ensuring that “every single student foam is replaced with new durable materials.”

He extended appreciation to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Distinguished Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, for supporting the timely initiative. Photographs shared showed the Vice Chancellor inspecting stacks of new foams as they were distributed across hostels, with students and staff present to witness the exercise.

“These are not just projects; they are a reaffirmation of our commitment to creating a learning environment where students can thrive,” Prof. Georgewill emphasized.

The developments have been widely welcomed by the university community as evidence of responsive leadership and purposeful governance under the current administration.
