Students of the University of Port Harcourt, under the banner of the institution’s Student Union Government Senate, paid an official visit to the Federal House of Representatives in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, as part of the National Assembly’s 2025 Parliamentary Week celebrations.
In a video obtained by correspondents, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas acknowledged the presence of the UNIPORT delegation during plenary proceedings. The student representatives were at the National Assembly to observe legislative sessions as part of their civic learning and leadership development.
From the university’s side, the visit was led by the Senate President of the SUG, Senator Glory Agala, and formed part of a broader effort to deepen the democratic understanding of student leaders. A statement issued by the SUG Director of Information, Comrade Edeh David Promise, described the outing as a “successful and impactful visit” aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of the student legislative body.
“Yesterday, the SUG Senate representatives of the University of Port Harcourt, led by the Senate President Senator Glory Agala, paid a visit to the Federal House of Representatives, Abuja Nigeria, as part of this year’s Parliamentary Week celebration. Congratulations to all the SUG Senate representatives on a successful and impactful visit,” the statement read.
The observation visit is expected to play a significant role in enhancing governance within the university’s student structure. The SUG Senate, which serves as the primary legislative body for students at the University of Port Harcourt, is tasked with addressing matters of student welfare, oversight, and representation. Engagements such as this provide firsthand exposure to national legislative standards, a development likely to improve deliberations, institutional understanding, and accountability within the campus community.
Despite several efforts, attempts to reach Senator Glory Agala, Senate President of the SUG, for further comment were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
