The Institute of Niger Delta Studies at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) recently held an orientation programme for newly admitted postgraduate students across various disciplines. The event, which took place in February 2025, provided an opportunity to familiarise students with the academic expectations and opportunities available at the Institute.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, acknowledged the progress made under the leadership of the Acting Director, Dr. Gift Okeah, since his appointment. “We are impressed with the progress made so far since the appointment of the new Director in acting capacity, Dr. Gift Okeah,” he remarked.
Welcoming the new students, Prof. Georgewill emphasised that while the flexibility of the postgraduate programmes allows students to work, do business, and study, it should not be mistaken for leniency.
“We welcome the new students and urge them to know that the flexibility of the programs that allows them to work, do business and study should not be taken for leniency, as the program requires dedication, commitment, and hard work, as in all programs of the University,” he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to strive for the highest level of academic excellence, highlighting that UNIPORT’s distinguished faculty and world-class learning environment conform to international best standards. “The array of distinguished scholars in the University of Port Harcourt will walk the walk with them through their journeys in the University of Port Harcourt,” he assured.
He further commended the Acting Director, Dr Gift Okeah, and his team for their efforts in repositioning the Institute and ensuring its continued growth. “We commended the Acting Director of the Institute, Dr. Gift Okeah, and his team for their initiative at repositioning the Institute,” he noted.
