The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) hosted a one-day event organised by the National Pension Commission (PenCom) to discuss a programmed withdrawal template for retiring professors in universities across the South-South region.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, acknowledged the presence of the Commission’s Director-General, who was ably represented, alongside other key officials.

He highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating, “We commended the PenCom for this initiative as it reflects foresight, responsibility, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the workforce.”

Prof. Georgewill described the programme as “laudable and crucial,” emphasising its role in building a pension system that not only rewards years of service but also ensures financial independence for retiring professors.

“It’s laudable and crucial in order to foster a system that not only rewards hard work but also ensures a future of financial independence for retiring Professors,” he noted.

The Vice-Chancellor also expressed appreciation for the distinguished professors who participated in the discussions, recognising their engagement as essential in shaping policies that affect their future. “We commended the array of distinguished Professors who responded to this call for discussions on issues of retirement for Professors in Nigerian universities,” he added.

Correspondence gathered that the event, which commenced at 9:00 AM, provided an important platform for university professors to engage with PenCom on retirement planning and financial security post-service.
