The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has expressed gratitude to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Barrister Nyesom Ezebunwo Wike, for his sustained support and transformative contributions to the institution.
During a formal gathering attended by university officials, governing council members, and press representatives, UNIPORT’s Vice Chancellor lauded Wike, an alumnus, for his role in advancing the university’s infrastructure and academic growth.
In his address, the Vice Chancellor thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Wike, a distinguished alumnus of UNIPORT, as a minister. He said the appointment has brought pride to the university community.
He highlighted Wike’s legacy of philanthropy, including the construction of the Faculty of Law building, a state-of-the-art convocation arena described as “second to none in this part of the globe,” and critical road networks within the campus.
In recognition of Wike’s contributions, the university announced that the strategic road in front of the Senate Building and the pathway leading to the new convocation arena have been named after the FCT Minister, with commemorative signage already installed.
“These gestures symbolise our deep appreciation for his unwavering commitment to our institution,” the Vice Chancellor stated.
The event also spotlighted the collaborative efforts of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Distinguished Senator Mao Ohuanbunwo.
The Vice-Chancellor praised Ohuanbunwo’s leadership, noting his pivotal role in fostering unity and driving progress alongside council members.
“Senator Ohuanbunwo has been a father figure, working tirelessly to reposition UNIPORT for excellence,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of UNIPORT’s 5,000 staff and 40,000 students, the Vice Chancellor reiterated the community’s gratitude, stating, “We thank you for the past, present, and future support. May God continue to bless and keep you.”
