The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has called on the South African government to swiftly apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the brutal killing of a Nigerian man, Anthony Mbonu, in Durban City.

In a statement issued on Thursday, NUSA’s National Publicity Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, condemned the murder, describing it as a devastating loss to the Nigerian community in South Africa.

According to Olunloyo, the 43-year-old Mbonu was shot and killed on Sunday by two unidentified assailants, leaving behind his grieving eight-month-pregnant wife and two children.

“NUSA strongly condemns this act of violence against a member of our community,” Olunloyo stated. “We urge the South African authorities to ensure a thorough investigation, leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

He further revealed that NUSA is actively collaborating with local authorities to push for a comprehensive inquiry into the incident, ensuring justice is served for the victim and his bereaved family.

Mbonu’s remains have been deposited in a mortuary in Durban, with investigations already underway. However, the motive behind the attack remains unknown.

In light of the tragic incident, NUSA has urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain vigilant, exercise caution in their daily activities, and promptly report any suspicious movements to local authorities.

Olunloyo reassured the community that NUSA remains committed to supporting Mbonu’s family through this challenging time and will continue to provide updates on the case as new developments unfold.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones,” he said.
