The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, has called on students to embrace innovation and focus on solving societal problems, rather than replicating Western models.
She gave the charge during a public lecture and the inauguration of an innovation and resource hub at the Faculty of Engineering, donated by the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN).
Speaking at the event, Ogunsola said: “We can’t afford to be copycats of what the West has done… we are looking for solutions that will not negatively impact our climate. We have to start thinking of new paths.”
She encouraged students to approach global problems creatively, highlighting their ability to exceed expectations when challenged. The vice-chancellor commended APWEN for their support and expressed confidence that the hub would boost innovation within the university.
The Lagos Chapter Chairman of APWEN, Mrs Atinuke Owolabi, said the association would continue to empower young women through mentorship and exposure to industry, with a goal of raising women leaders in engineering.
“Today is not only about commissioning the innovation hub, but also a public lecture showcasing the innovations of our young female engineers,” she said.
She added that APWEN was committed to increasing female participation and leadership in the engineering sector.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ashiru, Pro-Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University, urged young engineers to commercialise their ideas, stressing the importance of partnerships and funding in turning inventions into successful products.
“Every problem we face in life presents an opportunity for innovation,” Ashiru said.
