The 2026 Times Higher Education rankings have positioned the University of Ibadan (UI) as Nigeria’s leading university once more, regaining the number one spot after several years. UI and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) both placed in the global 801-1000 band, making them the only Nigerian universities to reach that level in this year’s ranking.
Just behind them are Bayero University Kano, Covenant University, and Landmark University, all in the 1001-1200 global group. Universities like Ahmadu Bello University, University of Ilorin, University of Jos, and University of Nigeria, Nsukka, occupy the 1201-1500 tier. Several institutions fell into the 1501+ category this year.
