The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a new security warning urging its citizens to remain cautious, especially in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. According to the advisory, Americans are advised to avoid unnecessary visits to military and government facilities as well as areas with large gatherings. The alert was released on September 2, 2025, and follows similar advisories issued earlier this year.
The Embassy stressed the importance of staying alert in public places, varying daily travel routines, and keeping emergency exit strategies in mind. Citizens were also encouraged to review personal security plans regularly. These measures, according to the U.S. Mission, are precautionary steps designed to reduce risks amid heightened security concerns.
This is not the first time such warnings have been made. In May, U.S. citizens were advised to avoid the Mogadishu Barracks area after a suspected suicide bombing, while in June, another alert highlighted the risk of attacks on government and military installations. The consistency of these warnings shows an ongoing concern about the safety of foreign nationals in parts of the country.
The Nigerian government, however, has reassured the public that Abuja and other cities remain safe. Officials maintain that security agencies are actively monitoring the situation and are committed to protecting residents, visitors, and diplomatic communities.
