At least six people, including a pregnant woman and a staff member of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), have died after a high-tension electricity cable snapped in the Okrika community of Rivers State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, around 1:12 am, in a residential area of Okrika Local Government Area, according to reports.
The fallen cable reportedly sparked a fire that destroyed a building and properties worth millions of naira, leaving residents devastated and in panic.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were caught asleep and had little chance to escape when the live cable struck.
Emergency response teams and officials from the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) are currently assessing the damage.
