President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian youths to utilize digital media as a force for unity, innovation, and national development.He made the call during the Progressives Digital Summit held Friday at the State House, Abuja.

The two-day event had as its theme: “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development.”

Tinubu noted that digital platforms offer opportunities to empower the youth, boost economic growth, and shape the country’s future.

“We are in a world where disinformation spreads easily, verify before you amplify.”

He encouraged young Nigerians to make digital spaces reflect national values such as honesty, compassion, discipline, and patriotism.

“I challenge you to use your platforms not only for self-expression, anger or retaliation, but for problem-solving and mentoring,” he said.

Highlighting government efforts, Tinubu said investments are ongoing in digital infrastructure to improve internet access nationwide. He added that cybersecurity would remain a top priority.

“As our digital ecosystem grows, so must our collective responsibility to ensure safety, trust, and accountability,” he said.

Tinubu also commended Nigerian youth for using digital tools to voice opinions and build innovative solutions.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, condemned the spread of disinformation, particularly ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Digital media are no longer just spaces for jokes, memes, or dance videos. They are battlegrounds where elections are won or lost,” he stated.

Mr Dada Olusegun, summit convener and Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, encouraged Nigerians to see social media as a tool for national transformation.

“In just a decade, social media has transformed from a tool of personal connection into a powerful engine of communication, innovation, and influence,” he said. “It is now central to how governments engage citizens, how businesses expand, and how ideas are exchanged.”

The summit drew participation from top government officials, youth groups, tech experts, media strategists, NGOs, and civil society organizations.
