President Bola Tinubu has officially declared April 7 as National Police Day to honour fallen heroes and recognise the sacrifices and heroism of Nigeria Police Force personnel.

Speaking through Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the maiden edition of the Police Day celebration held at Eagle Square, Abuja, Tinubu said the initiative aligns with his administration’s broader commitment to reforming and professionalising the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

“As President, I reaffirm this administration’s steadfast dedication to the welfare and empowerment of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said. “A secure Nigeria is vital for our collective prosperity, and this vision begins with ensuring that our police force is well-equipped, well-trained, and well-motivated.”

He said the Federal Government had institutionalised April 7 as an annual national celebration, “cementing its place in our national calendar and demonstrating our enduring appreciation for the Nigeria Police Force.”

The President emphasised the urgency of reforming the police to effectively tackle current security threats. He revealed that his government is deploying modern tools and technology, alongside improving welfare support such as housing, healthcare, and education for police families.

“These promises will begin to materialise immediately,” Tinubu assured. “Furthermore, we will ensure that your salaries and benefits reflect the gravity of your responsibilities and the risks you face daily.”

He said the administration was taking decisive steps to address internal security challenges like banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping, stressing that “the police are the cornerstone of our national security and democracy.”

On the essence of National Police Day, Tinubu explained that it serves not just to celebrate current personnel, but to immortalise those who paid the ultimate price.

“To their families, we extend our deepest condolences and our unwavering commitment to preserving their legacy. Let it be clear: April 7 is not merely a date. It is a symbol of our enduring partnership and respect for the Nigeria Police Force.”

The President also praised the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his commitment to aligning the force with the administration’s reform agenda.

Earlier in his remarks, IGP Egbetokun said the occasion was an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of officers and to renew calls for excellence, professionalism, and respect for human rights in the discharge of police duties.

He highlighted the ongoing reform initiatives of the force, aimed at fostering trust, justice, and national development.

The event featured several highlights, including a guard of honour reviewed by the Vice-President, a tactical procession by police and sister security agencies, and a silent drill display by NPF personnel.
