The University of Port Harcourt witnessed a week of significant events and achievements from Monday, December 2nd, to Friday, December 6th, 2024.

  1. Golden Jubilee Preparations: In anticipation of the University’s upcoming 50th Anniversary in 2025, the management has established a planning committee headed by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Clifford Ofurum. The committee consists of representatives from various colleges and faculties, the Student Union, and alumni, among other stakeholders. The University transitioned to full university status in 1975, and the committee invites alumni and strategic partners to collaborate in commemorating its 50-year journey.
  2. Research Innovations: Emphasizing the importance of research for societal development, the University further solidified its reputation by securing two patents awarded to Professor Ibitoru Hart and her team for their innovation on a “Pyrolysis Machine and Process for Conversion of Waste.” The achievement is a commendation of Prof. Hart’s work and an encouragement for other researchers to pursue patenting their innovations.
  3. Thanksgiving Celebration: The University community gathered on December 2nd for a Thanksgiving event, reflecting on the blessings and protection provided throughout the year. Guest minister Apostle Victor Lawrence led attendees in contemplation of God’s wonders and highlighted the importance of genuine repentance and forgiveness.
  4. Public Service Games Success: The University hosted the 2024 Federal Public Service Games at its stadium, where Emeka John Mark of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment clinched the 100m championship title in a highly competitive atmosphere that featured participants from various governmental departments and agencies.
  5. Leadership in Education: The University celebrated Professor Mathew Wegwu of the Department of Biochemistry, who was elected President of the International Society for Comparative Education, Science and Technology (ISCEST). Additionally, Professor Godfrey O. Omojefe from the Department of Finance and Banking has taken on the role as the 6th President and Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Financial and Investment Analysis, Nigeria (CIFIAN).
  6. Statistical Representation: Dr. Uchenna Ogoke, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, was elected to the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (CISON), further enhancing the University’s representation in national bodies.
  7. Alumni Recognition: In a notable visit, alumni Dr. Victor Stephen and Dr. Rahul Mongia, currently practicing in the UK, returned to the University to express gratitude for the foundational education they received. Their achievements were celebrated as they shared their experiences.
  8. Management Appointments: The University Governing Council is moving forward with the appointment of a substantive Bursar and Director of Works and Services. The Senate convened for its 484th Meeting (Extraordinary) to nominate four professors to participate in the interview panels.
  9. Valedictory Senate Session: On December 4th, 2024, the Senate held its 18th Valedictory Senate Session at the CBN Centre of Excellence to honor retiring professors. The event allowed colleagues, management, and friends to celebrate their contributions as mentors and academics.
  10. Accreditation Efforts: The University welcomed additional teams from the National Universities Commission as the accreditation exercise continues, hosting both welcome and exit meetings to facilitate their important national assignment.
  11. Support for Indigent Students: The University was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development at the launch of the Victor Tulutu Briggs Foundation, which continues its generosity toward supporting indigent students at the institution.
