Hospitals in Taiwan are piloting a new AI-powered nursing robot called Nurabot, built by Foxconn with technological support from NVIDIA. Designed to assist medical staff with repetitive or physically demanding tasks, Nurabot represents a cutting-edge effort to alleviate burnout and staffing shortages in healthcare.
Nurabot patrols hospital corridors to deliver medications and specimens, monitor patient vital signs, and assist visitors with navigation. It features a tray for transporting items and a friendly digital face on its display, which helps create a more approachable presence for patients and staff.
Foxconn claims Nurabot could reduce nurse workload by about 30 percent, giving human staff more room to focus on critical care and emergency response. Initial tests are underway in several major medical centers in Taiwan, including Taichung Veterans General Hospital.
The collaboration leverages NVIDIA’s AI models to power motion and functions, enhancing Nurabot’s intelligence and adaptability. The robot is also being refined to handle tasks like serving meals, multilingual communication, and potentially recognizing individuals by facial features.
As many expec⁠t the global nursing shortage to reach crisis levels in coming years, AI-driven tools like Nurabot are seen as potentially transformative. While robots are unlikely to fully replace human caregivers, they may offer a valuable helping hand—especially in routine duties—and help keep hospitals running more efficiently.
