The Kano State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has urged the state government to declare a state of emergency in the sports sector to enable sweeping reforms.

This was part of a resolution reached at an emergency meeting of the association’s State Executive Committee, held on Thursday.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Zaharadeen Saleh, and Secretary, Muhammad Nur, the association described the condition of sports in Kano as “dire,” citing neglect, inadequate infrastructure, and poor investment.

SWAN noted that the sector continues to suffer from inadequate funding, outdated governance structures, a dearth of qualified personnel—especially coaches—and a lack of private sector involvement. It further pointed to mismanagement of existing resources as a major issue demoralising athletes and administrators.

The association also referenced the recent deaths of athletes, coaches, and officials who represented Kano at the Gateway Games in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as a stark indicator of the system’s failure.

“These individuals served the state with honour and died in active service. We call on the state government to immortalise them by naming a major sports facility in their honour and instituting an annual sports event to preserve their legacy,” the statement said.

SWAN further called for immediate support for the families of the deceased, known as the “Kano 22,” many of whom left behind dependents.

The group recommended the provision of scholarships, educational grants, and financial aid to relieve the burden on bereaved families, while urging high-level government presence at national sporting events to boost morale.

Regarding Kano Pillars Football Club, the association appealed for urgent intervention to revitalise the team, describing it as central to the state’s sporting identity.

While commending the state government’s support during the 22nd National Sports Festival, SWAN urged for sustained and strategic investments to rebuild the sector.
