The Akwa Ibom chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed deep concern over the vandalism of facilities at the Uyo Township Stadium, describing the trend as alarming and detrimental to sports development.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of SWAN’s April meeting, held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. The communiqué was signed by Akila Matawal and Isaiah Eka, chairman and secretary of the Communique Drafting Committee, respectively.

SWAN described the vandalism as “a bad omen”, especially after funds had been invested in upgrading the facilities to promote sports in the state.

“Before the just concluded Niger Delta Sports Festival, hoodlums took over the stadium, turned the facilities and the offices to their own,” the communiqué stated.

The association condemned the unlawful occupation and misuse of public sports facilities and warned that such acts undermine the state’s investment in youth and sports development.

SWAN called on the Akwa Ibom State Government to bolster security at the stadium to prevent further damage by criminals and hoodlums.

The association, however, lauded the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for organizing a grassroots sports and talent discovery festival in Uyo and appreciated Governor Umo Eno for his administration’s support in ensuring the event’s success.

Additionally, SWAN advocated for the revival of school sports across the state, stressing that early talent identification and development at the school level is vital for producing future stars who can represent Akwa Ibom and Nigeria on the global stage.
