Local government chairmen removed by the Supreme Court in Rivers State have officially handed over their councils to the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) in compliance with Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s directive.
Despite initial tensions, reports indicate a generally peaceful transition across the local government areas.
In Obio/Akpor, the home LGA of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, some residents reportedly celebrated the departure of the sacked chairman, Ambassador Chinwo Ihunwo. However, Ihunwo confirmed that he had transferred leadership to Mr. Sam Ichechi Amadi, the HLGA, in line with the Supreme Court judgment. Expressing confidence in Amadi’s leadership, he stated:
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the betterment of Obio/Akpor LGA. I look forward to witnessing the positive impact of Mr. Amadi’s leadership in the days ahead.”
Similarly, the ousted chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Ezebunwo Ichemati, formally handed over the council’s administration to HLGA Clifford Paul.
Addressing the transition, Ichemati stated:
“Government is a continuum, and governance at the third tier continues with the HLGA and other key officials managing local government affairs. Though our tenure was short, we made a significant impact, reshaping the narrative of local governance and improving lives.”
He acknowledged the support of Governor Fubara, crediting him with creating a positive work environment that enabled him and his colleagues to fulfill their campaign promises.
“We are immensely grateful for the chance to serve. To the people of Port Harcourt City, your support made governance smoother, and we will always cherish your contributions to our successes. To my loyal supporters, I deeply appreciate the trust and love you have shown me. As we look toward the future, let us continue to foster a stronger bond for the development of our city,” Ichemati added.
