A special security detail has been deployed to Colombo National Hospital, where former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is receiving medical treatment after being remanded on Friday.
According to the Department of Prisons spokesperson Jagath Weerasinghe, seven jailors and four prison guards have been assigned to ensure Wickremesinghe’s security.
He said the former president was arrested and remanded on charges of misusing state funds.
Wickremesinghe was initially admitted to the prison hospital before being transferred to Colombo National Hospital.
This is the first time in Sri Lanka’s history that a former executive president has been arrested and remanded.
His case is scheduled for further hearing on Tuesday.
