The South Korean Embassy in Nigeria has joined the global community in mourning the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, recognising his contributions to strengthening relations between South Korea and Nigeria.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, passed away on Sunday at a London hospital following an illness, as confirmed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, and former aide, Bashir Ahmad.

In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the South Korean Embassy expressed its deep sorrow and acknowledged Buhari’s instrumental role in enhancing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari. His leadership helped shape Nigeria’s path and contributed to the growth of South Korea and Nigeria relations. Our thoughts are with his family and the people of Nigeria during this time of loss,” the statement read.

The statement highlighted that under Buhari’s presidency, Nigeria and South Korea expanded cooperation across various sectors, including trade, energy, education, and technology.

The embassy noted key initiatives during Buhari’s tenure, such as joint efforts to boost industrial capacity and enhance human capital development.

It further acknowledged that Buhari’s administration created a platform for deeper diplomatic engagement, which set the foundation for future collaboration between the two nations.
