The University of Port Harcourt is advancing its commitment to hands-on learning in the hospitality sector, as students of the Department of Hospitality, Management and Tourism (HMT) engaged in food and beverage practicals to sharpen their skills for the global industry.
This was revealed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, in a post shared on his official social media handle, following his participation in one of the sessions.
“We participated in the food and beverages practicals of the HMT department of the Faculty of Management Sciences,” he wrote.
Prof. Georgewill described the exercise as a crucial component of the University’s training philosophy, aimed at producing graduates with the professional competence needed to thrive in a rapidly expanding sector.
“As the hospitality industry grows, the University of Port Harcourt continues to provide the platform for our students to take advantage of this rapidly growing industry as we train them to become the best professionals in the industry,” he added.
Starreporters correspondent reports that the practical, which saw students don full culinary attire as they engaged in detailed food preparation processes, is part of a broader curriculum designed to blend theoretical knowledge with essential real-world experience.
University officials say this balance of learning ensures that graduates of the programme are not only knowledgeable but also job-ready.
Experts have long highlighted the critical importance of practical exposure in Hospitality, Management and Tourism education, noting that graduates with demonstrable skills are more likely to excel in customer-focused industries and command a competitive advantage in the labour market.
With continued investment in experiential learning, UNIPORT is positioning its HMT graduates as industry-ready professionals equipped to deliver excellence in hospitality, tourism, and related sectors.
