On July 28 at 1231 pm local time a gunman opened fire at Or Tor Kor Market in the Bang Sue district of northern Bangkok. The attack killed five security guards and wounded one other person according to the Royal Thai Police.
The suspect then died by suicide at the scene. Police are working to confirm the shooter’s identity and to determine whether the attack was linked to ongoing clashes on the Thailand Cambodia border.
Security footage shows a man wearing a black T shirt a cap camouflage shorts and carrying a backpack slung across his chest as he fired multiple shots while walking through the market aisles.
Gun violence in Thailand is more common than in much of Southeast Asia. In 2020 a junior army officer killed 29 people and wounded 58 others in Nakhon Ratchasima illustrating persistent public safety concerns.
Authorities have increased security at public venues across Bangkok. Investigators are examining the motive behind this latest shooting and any possible connections to regional events.
