Seventeen people were injured following an explosion in a residential area in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province in northern China, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to local authorities, four of the victims remain in critical condition, while three have already been discharged after receiving treatment.

The incident took place around 1 p.m. in the Beiying neighbourhood of Xiaodian District. A fire that broke out as a result of the blast was brought under control by 3 p.m.

Rescue teams have since launched door-to-door safety inspections within the affected building to ensure residents’ wellbeing and structural integrity.

An investigation into the cause of the explosion is currently ongoing.
