Russia’s defense ministry has declared full control over the strategic Ukrainian town of Chasiv Yar, following a prolonged and bloody 16-month battle. The town, located in the embattled Donetsk region, has been a key military objective due to its position west of Bakhmut and its proximity to major cities like Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Russian state media released footage of troops raising flags over the town, signaling what they claim as a critical step forward in the eastern campaign.
However, Ukrainian military officials have strongly denied Russia’s claim. They insist that fighting is still ongoing in and around Chasiv Yar and that Ukrainian forces continue to hold defensive positions. Ukrainian commanders labeled the Russian announcement as part of a propaganda campaign aimed at creating the illusion of success. Independent analysts suggest that while Russia may have gained ground in parts of the town, the situation remains fluid and far from fully resolved.
The potential fall of Chasiv Yar would mark Russia’s most significant territorial gain in months and could open the door to further advances deeper into Donetsk. The terrain in the area—marked by dense forests, waterways, and elevated ground—has made combat slow and costly for both sides.
In a related escalation, Russia also launched one of its deadliest aerial assaults on Kyiv in recent months. A combination of drones and cruise missiles rained down on the capital overnight, killing at least seven civilians, including a child, and injuring dozens more. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, calling them another example of Russia’s disregard for civilian lives and international norms.
As the battle for Chasiv Yar continues, the broader war in Ukraine remains at a critical juncture. Russia’s efforts to break through eastern lines come amid increased military aid for Ukraine from its Western allies. Meanwhile, calls for diplomatic negotiations remain stalled, with neither side showing signs of backing down.
