The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on Monday presented Certificates of Return to the 23 newly elected local government chairmen and 319 councillors who emerged victorious in the just-concluded council elections.
Presenting the certificates in Port Harcourt, RSIEC Chairman, Mr. Michael Odey, congratulated the winners and urged them to uphold the confidence reposed in them by the electorate. He advised any aggrieved contestants to seek redress through the legal channels available.
Speaking on behalf of the elected chairmen, Mr. Alwell Ihunda, Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area (PHALGA), commended President Bola Tinubu and the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, for providing the enabling environment for a peaceful exercise. He also lauded security agencies for their role in ensuring a smooth and hitch-free poll.
Some of the chairmen, in separate interviews, pledged to deliver dividends of democracy to their constituents.
Mr. Lucky Otuo, Chairman of Andoni LGA, promised to prioritise human capacity development and inclusivity, while Mr. Chukwu Ogbogu, Chairman of Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni LGA, said his administration would focus on youth empowerment and infrastructural development.
