The Rivers State House of Assembly has passed a resolution directing its Committee on Public Complaints to swiftly investigate the recent oil spill at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) facility in Bonny Local Government Area.
The committee is tasked with visiting the impacted communities to assess the extent of damage caused by the spill and to formulate recommendations for assisting affected residents.
This action follows a petition presented to the House on Tuesday by the Leader of the House, Sokari Goodboy Sokari. He emphasized the need for the Assembly to compel the NNPC to take immediate action to clean up the spill and restore the environment.
In response, Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo instructed the Committee on Public Complaints to prioritize the visit to the affected areas.
Additionally, our correspondent reports that the House also conducted the first reading of two key pieces of legislation: the Rivers State Real Estate Regulatory Authority Bill 2024 and the Rivers State College of Nursing Sciences Bill 2024.
