On Monday, Rivers State Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Odu officially launched the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, urging women to speak out and support the fight against this critical issue.
Speaking at a sensitization program organized by the Egi Women Welfare Association in commemoration of the 2024 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Prof. Odu, represented by her Special Assistant on Research and Development, Cordelia Peterside, emphasized the importance of women supporting one another. She encouraged women to reach out to those in need when they see others in distress.
“Violence is not limited to physical assault; it includes emotional and psychological abuse as well,” warned the Deputy Governor, highlighting the multifaceted nature of gender-based violence.
Patience Manasseh, President of the Egi Women Welfare Association, also addressed the gathering, stressing that violence against women remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations globally.
The event aimed to raise awareness and foster community solidarity in the ongoing fight against gender-based violence, reinforcing the need for collective action to support and protect women in society.
