The music world is mourning the loss of Rick Davies the co founder and driving force of the legendary rock band Supertramp. Davies died at the age of 81 at his home in Long Island on September 5 2025 after a long battle with multiple myeloma. His death marks the end of an era for progressive rock and soft rock fans who grew up with the unique sound he helped create.

Davies founded Supertramp in London in 1969 and went on to shape one of the most recognizable sounds in rock history. With his deep baritone vocals and signature jazz influenced piano playing he gave the band a distinct style that blended sophistication with accessibility. He wrote and sang on classics such as Goodbye Stranger Bloody Well Right and contributed to the band’s global hits including The Logical Song and Take the Long Way Home. The group’s 1979 album Breakfast in America became a defining record of its time selling millions worldwide and earning critical acclaim.

Even after the departure of Roger Hodgson in 1983 Davies kept the band alive leading Supertramp through tours and new albums that carried their sound into later decades. In 2015 health struggles forced him to step back but he continued to perform locally with his band Ricky and the Rockets showing that music was his lifelong passion. His resilience both on stage and in his fight against illness left fans with lasting admiration.

Rick Davies’ influence reached far beyond his band’s chart success. He embodied the spirit of a musician dedicated to craft and honesty leaving behind songs that still resonate across generations. His passing leaves a void in the world of rock but his music will continue to inspire and connect with audiences for decades to come.
