A psychologist, Prof. Remi Alarape, has urged individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts to seek professional help rather than resort to taking their own lives.

Alarape, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, advised in an interview in Ota, Ogun State.

His call for action follows recent suicide incidents, including the case of a police officer who shot himself in Igbesa and a 19-year-old boy who hanged himself in Ijebu Igbo, both in Ogun State.

Alarape emphasized that the increasing rate of suicide cases in the country requires urgent attention from individuals and society at large.

He noted that suicide is a complex issue with multiple causes, including mental health disorders, trauma, stress, social isolation, academic pressure, substance abuse, and lack of support—particularly among young people.

“Suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility. By working together, we can create a safer and more supportive environment for all,” he stated.

Alarape encouraged individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts—or those who know someone in distress—to reach out to a trusted adult, mental health professional, or available helpline.

He also recommended key strategies to reduce suicide rates, such as fostering open conversations, actively listening to those in distress, promoting mental health awareness, strengthening community support systems, and equipping individuals with effective coping mechanisms.
