Supporters of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, took to the streets of Port Harcourt on Monday in a show of solidarity with their leader.
The protesters, who believe the governor is being targeted following the recent Supreme Court ruling that sacked local government chairmen, occupied the Omuma LGA secretariat and other key locations in the early hours of the day.
On Friday, the Supreme Court’s ruling dealt a significant blow to Fubara, nullifying the October 5, 2024, local government elections in Rivers State. Additionally, the judgment reaffirmed the directive barring the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation from disbursing statutory monthly allocations to the state.
Correspondence gathered that the court’s decision has sparked outrage among Fubara’s supporters, who accuse the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of orchestrating a political witch-hunt against the governor.
