The Police Command in Anambra said it rescued a man who attempted to commit suicide by climbing a power transmission high-tension pole in Awada, Onitsha.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated this in Awka on Wednesday.

According to him, police operatives attached to the Awada Division on Tuesday evening successfully rescued the man after he climbed the high-tension pole.

“On receiving the distress information, the operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene, cordoned off the area to prevent danger, and controlled the large crowd that had gathered.

“After several minutes of persuasion by the police and some concerned members of the public, the man eventually climbed down safely.

“He was immediately taken into protective custody at the station, where he identified himself and disclosed his age,” he said.

Ikenga added that the state Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, directed that the victim undergo proper medical and mental health evaluation.

Orutugu assured that the command would provide the necessary support to ensure the victim’s well-being.

He appealed to members of the public to always seek lawful and peaceful solutions to personal challenges, and to reach out to family, friends, or relevant support groups in times of distress.

He said further developments would be communicated accordingly.
