A senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Dr Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has died in a hotel in what police have described as an unfortunate incident.
The lecturer reportedly passed away on Tuesday, 15 July, during an encounter with a 22-year-old 200-level female student of the university.
The incident occurred at a hotel in Anyigba and was reported to the police by the hotel manager.
Spokesperson for the Kogi Police Command, SP William Aya, confirmed the development in Lokoja on Friday. He said an autopsy has been conducted to determine the cause of death.
According to Aya, the hotel manager, Moses Friday, informed the police that the student, Gloria Samuel, had rushed to the reception to alert staff that the lecturer had collapsed in the room after their encounter.
Ibikunle was quickly taken to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor.
Police investigations are ongoing, and further action will be taken based on the outcome of the findings.
A student of the institution, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the lecturer had been with the 22-year-old student, believed to be from the Department of Social Studies Education, before he collapsed.
The student also claimed that the female student was taken into police custody and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
Dr Ibikunle, who was reportedly married with children, had checked into the hotel earlier that day with the student.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the lecturer may have consumed multiple energy drinks prior to his death.
