The police, on Tuesday, arraigned a 35-year-old man, Kolawole Taiwo, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged N2 million fraud.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a charge of fraud.
The prosecutor, Insp Sodiq Adeniyi, told the court that the defendant and others now at large committed the offence between January and February 2024 in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N2 million from four complainants, Adeleke Ayodele, Bamidele Taiwo, Itanwola Akinwale and Olugbenga Jorda, on the pretext of securing employment for them in Burkina Faso.
According to him, the defendant failed to secure the employment for the complainants.
Adeniyi said the offence contravened Section 329(3) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
Counsel to the defendant, Mr Tolulope Bewaji, urged the court to grant his client bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.
The Chief Magistrate, Dolamu Babalogbon, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum.
She adjourned the case until Jan.22 for hearing.
