The Plateau governor’s wife, Mrs Helen Mutfwang, has called for collective action to combat gender-based violence (GBV) in the state.
Mutfwang made the call on Monday in Jos while briefing newsmen as part of activities to mark 16 days of activism on GBV.
The governor’s wife said that there was an urgent need to address the root causes of violence against women and girls.
“Gender-based violence is a grave human rights violation and a societal failure.
“The 25th of November marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
“The period begins a global campaign that culminates on December 10th, which is Human Rights Day.
“The period should be a call to action for everyone to work towards a society free from fear, violence, and discrimination,” she added.
Mutfwang stated that nearly one in every three women worldwide experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
She emphasised the devastating impact of such violence on individuals, families, and communities, emphasising the need for accountability and increased investment in policies and strategies to address GBV.
She described the theme of this year’s campaign, “Towards Beijing +30: Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” as apt.
According to her, the theme underscores the upcoming 30th anniversary review of the Beijing declaration and platform for action in 2025.
Mutfwang called on governments, civil society organisations, and the private sector to renew their commitment to ending violence against women and girls.
The governor’s wife commended the government for prioritising the protection and empowerment of women and girls.
