In a dramatic turn of events Congress in Peru voted to remove President Dina Boluarte from office citing “moral incapacity” after years of mounting scandals public dissatisfaction and a severe surge in violent crime. The decision represents a seismic shift in a nation long plagued by political turbulence.

Late Friday lawmakers convened in a special session and passed the motion overwhelmingly with 124 votes in favor leaving no dissenters. The move came just hours after a concert in Lima was rocked by a shooting which inflamed a population already frustrated by rampant insecurity. With Boluarte absent from the proceedings the path was cleared for her removal without formal defense.

As per constitutional succession José Jerí the head of Congress was immediately sworn in as Peru’s new interim president. At just 38 years old Jerí inherits a country in crisis and pledges to steer a transitional government focused on reconciliation stability and restoring public trust.

Boluarte’s presidency has been marred by controversy from the start. She assumed power in December 2022 after the ouster of Pedro Castillo and has since faced repeated protests allegations of corruption and human rights abuses. Her approval ratings had plunged to near historic lows. Her downfall underscores how political legitimacy can evaporate in times of systemic unrest and weak public support.

The new administration faces enormous challenges. Public pressure demands swift action on crime and extortion, which have surged across the country. Institutional trust is fragile many communities feel abandoned and desperate for solutions. There is also the looming general election scheduled for April 2026 which now may be shaped by these turbulent developments.

Peru now stands at a crossroads. The transition period will test whether new leadership can deliver change or merely usher in another chapter of instability. The coming months will reveal if this political reset offers Peruvians a chance for renewal or deeper fracture.
