The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has announced that total assets under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) rose to ₦23.33 trillion as of 31 March 2025.
Mr Saleem Abdulrahman, Director of Surveillance at PenCom, disclosed this on Thursday in Lagos, stating that the figure marks an increase of ₦820 billion compared to the ₦22.51 trillion recorded at the end of December 2024.
He attributed the growth to additional contributions from Retirement Savings Account (RSA) holders and investment income, including gains from rising equity prices and interest from fixed-income securities.
Providing a breakdown of the pension assets, Abdulrahman said that RSA Funds I to VI accounted for ₦17.90 trillion, representing 76.73 per cent of the total. Existing Schemes contributed ₦2.77 trillion or 11.87 per cent, while Closed Pension Funds made up ₦2.66 trillion or 11.40 per cent.
“The Pension Fund Assets were mainly invested in Federal Government Securities, which accounted for 62.09 per cent of the total pension assets as at 31 March,” he said.
“This is followed by domestic ordinary shares with 11.02 per cent and money market instruments at 8.91 per cent.”
Abdulrahman also noted that the industry portfolio delivered an annualised year-to-date performance of 19.29 per cent by the end of the first quarter.
He further revealed that PenCom, in collaboration with Financial Sector Deepening Africa (FSD Africa), is organising a workshop focused on investment in alternative assets. The session targets Chairpersons of the Board Investment Strategy and Risk Management Committees of Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).
“The workshop is part of the commission’s strategic initiative to promote a diversified and safer pension fund investment portfolio, aimed at enhancing the performance of pension portfolios,” he added.
