The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) has hailed the PDP’s enduring role as a pillar of Nigeria’s democracy since its establishment on Aug. 3, 1998.

The Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Sen. Bala Mohammed, made the remarks in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Forum’s Director-General, Dr Emmanuel Agbo, to mark the party’s 27th anniversary.

Mohammed congratulated the party leadership, members, and supporters for their steadfast commitment to democracy and national development.

He recalled that the PDP was founded during Nigeria’s transition from military to civilian rule and quickly became a beacon of hope for citizens seeking democratic freedoms, economic progress, and social justice.

“The party’s landmark victory in the 1999 general elections marked the beginning of a new democratic era, with former President Olusegun Obasanjo laying the foundation for progressive leadership and institutional rebuilding,” he said.

He highlighted that the PDP governed Nigeria for 16 consecutive years, producing three presidents and driving reforms in telecommunications, banking, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

“These reforms fostered economic stability, improved workers’ welfare, expanded employment opportunities, stimulated investment, and revitalised entrepreneurship, ultimately contributing to poverty reduction,” he added.

Mohammed praised the PDP’s tradition of power rotation between North and South, which he said had strengthened national unity and inclusiveness.

Although now in opposition, he noted, the PDP continued to play a vital role in advancing governance, defending citizens’ rights, and holding government accountable.

Reflecting on the party’s journey, Mohammed admitted that while the PDP had faced challenges, including internal disagreements and electoral setbacks, it had shown resilience and commitment to reform.

“The party has made significant strides in fostering internal reconciliation and has remained vocal in calling for decisive action to tackle insecurity and restore peace to our communities,” he said.

As the PDP marks 27 years, Mohammed described the milestone as both a celebration of legacy and a renewed call to good governance, transparency, and public service.

“The road ahead is just as important as the path already taken. Nigerians look forward to a PDP that continues to evolve, inspire, and lead with integrity,” he said.
