Gov. Bassey Otu of Cross River, says his administration will embark on reforms that will tackle inherent challenges in the University of Cross River (UniCross).

Otu made the statement on Thursday in Calabar when the leadership of the university visited him.

It would be recalled that UniCross has recently been faced with challenges arising from leadership tussle and agitation for workers’ welfare.

The governor told the leadership that unity of purpose, collaboration and peaceful coexistence were critical for effective administration of the university.

He urged the management of UniCross to set strategic objectives geared towards raising the quality of learning and standard of the university.

“We need unity, this is not the time to take sides if we really want this institution to meet international academic standards,” he said.

Otu used the meeting to assure of his administration’s commitment towards improving infrastructure and the welfare of the university staff.

“I acknowledge the sacrifices being made by the union leaders in sustaining academic activities irrespective of financial constraints.

“Infrastructure and workers welfare will receive immediate attention. We shall work with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of staff and students,” he said.

Prof. Francisca Bassey, the Acting Vice Chancellor, said that the university was in dire need of infrastructure upgrade and improved workers’ welfare.

She commended the union leaders for their patience and reiterated the importance of a conducive academic environment to quality learning.

Earlier, the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr Fidelis Ugbo, commended the governor for saving the university from going into extinction.

Ugbo said that the governor’s interventions had been timely and strategic, saying,” the new leadership will be committed to the growth of the university”
