Gov. Monday Okpebholo has commended Team Edo for their performance at the ongoing 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta.
The commendation was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Tuesday in Benin.
As of Tuesday, Team Edo topped the medals table with 19 gold, five silver, and three bronze medals in weightlifting, gymnastics, swimming, and karate.
Notably, Edo’s women’s weightlifters secured a historic sweep of all nine gold medals on offer, while other athletes also excelled in their events.
Okpebholo attributed the success to deliberate investments and policy focus on reviving and repositioning sports as a tool for youth development, empowerment, and social cohesion in Edo State.
He said the victory reflects the new energy in the state’s sporting ecosystem, shaped by his SHINE Agenda, which prioritises youth engagement and talent discovery.
The governor assured athletes, coaches, and officials of continued support, expressing confidence that Team Edo would consolidate on their momentum and continue to bring glory to the state.
He added that the performance demonstrates the effectiveness of Edo’s sports development initiatives and the dedication of athletes and coaches.
The 9th National Youth Games, which opened on Aug. 26, will end on Sept. 6.
The competition features 37 sports with athletes from 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Delta, Lagos, Edo, Oyo, and Bayelsa are currently leading the race for this year’s crown.
