The Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, Chijioke Ihunwo, has announced the appointment of 130 special assistants to support his administration’s activities.

Ihunwo disclosed this development in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, emphasizing that the appointees are expected to perform their duties with dedication and diligence.

Among those appointed are Helen Nyekwere, Josephine Wogu, Daisy Worgu, Wagwu Hilda, Ogbonna Stella, Goodness Ogbonna, and Grace Amadi.

The announcement has sparked widespread reactions nationwide, with many questioning the rationale behind appointing such a large number of aides.

This practice, however, is not unique to Ihunwo. Recently, Yusuf Imam, the Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government Area in Kano State, approved the appointment of 60 aides to serve in various capacities within the local government.

An official letter issued by the Local Government Secretary, Ado Muhd Hotoro, justified the appointments as part of efforts to promote growth and development in the area.

While proponents argue that such appointments enhance governance by distributing responsibilities, critics see them as an unnecessary burden on public resources, urging leaders to prioritize efficiency and accountability.
