Ekiti Queens football club on Wednesday defeated Heartland Queens of Owerri, 1-0 in the season’s opening match of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).

The match was played at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado-Ekiti.

In the first half of the match, the home team, Ekiti Queens, had everything working for them as they had more ball possession to ensure that the visiting team did not control the game.

The strikers of Ekiti Queens made several attempts to convert their chances but failed in spite of their ball possession.

The first half of the match eventually ended goalless.

The hosts doubled their effort in the second half and were rewarded with a 74th minute goal, netted by substitute Odunayo Olaleye.

She had neatly placed the ball at the left hand side of the goalkeeper to score the only goal of the match.

Reacting, Head Coach of Ekiti Queens, Jacob Vandi, commended his team for playing according to instruction and for winning the vital three points for the first match in the new season of NWFL.

Vandi commended the State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, management of the club and the fans for their support and love for the team.

He assured them that the team would not rest on their victory but would play better in subsequent matches.

“I want to commend the team for a deserved victory because they played well to earn it.

“I equally want to appreciate our amiable governor for his support and ensuring that the team was given all it needed to improve their performance.

“I am assuring all our fans that we will make them proud in our subsequent matches,” he said.
