The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, has pledged immediate cash rewards for outstanding athletes during the 2025 National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged the ‘Gateway Games’.
Fatodu made the promise on Monday during a visit to the Team Lagos training camp at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, in Lagos.
“There will also be instant awards — a reward system will be in place to recognise top performers across all sports,” he stated.
He also disclosed plans for the athletes’ open and close camping arrangements ahead of the festival.
Correspondents report that Team Lagos has been undergoing intensive preparations for the event, which is scheduled to hold from 16 to 30 May in Ogun State.
Reaffirming the state’s commitment, Fatodu said the Lagos government remained dedicated to ensuring Team Lagos delivers a top-tier performance at the Games.
“I will continue to push on your behalf so that you receive what you deserve. Your tireless efforts, dedication, and commitment will always be appreciated by the state,” he said.
“We are working hard to achieve even better outcomes. There will be improved support for sports associations going forward.“
“This is the best team anyone could ask for. I’m proud of Team Lagos — the most competent, prestigious, and enviable contingent that any state can present,” he added.
Fatodu also assured that the state would prioritise athletes’ welfare and continue to invest in standard facilities and equipment to support their development.
“Your welfare is a top priority. The state is committed to ensuring a seamless and successful outing at the Games in Ogun,” he said.
Team Lagos captain, Olowolayemo Sikiru, thanked Fatodu for his swift intervention in addressing athletes’ needs and reaffirmed the team’s commitment to representing the state with honour.
“The level of our preparation across disciplines will showcase the Lagos spirit of excellence in sports and talent development,” he said.
